North Field Coffee
A packaging system for a small roaster with twelve changing coffees, and a website that reads like the bag.
The brief
North Field roasts twelve coffees at a time and rotates them with the harvest. Every new coffee meant a new label from a freelancer, and after three years the shelf looked like twelve different companies. They needed one system that would outlast any single coffee.
What we did
We treated the bag as the brand. Everything that stays the same, the mark, the name and the layout, is printed on stock bags in bulk. Everything that changes lives on one coloured band.
- One band, one origin. Each coffee gets a band colour drawn from its tasting notes. Red plum and panela became a clay red. Jasmine and lemon became a warm yellow.
- A label template anyone can use. The roasters fill in origin, process and roast in a simple template and print bands in-house on the day.
- A website that reads like the bag. Each product page picks up its band colour, and subscriptions show exactly which bag will arrive next.
Outcome
North Field launched four new coffees this spring without calling us once, which we consider the best possible review. Wholesale partners now recognise the bags from across a café.
